Hellen Obiri is Kenya's indomitable queen in 5000m, 10000m, and cross country, but Agnes Tirop has been giving her tremendous challenge both locally and in the international arena. It's worth noting that Agnes has subdued her on a number of occasions.
The duo has been representing Kenya in the above events. In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics for instance both represented Kenya in 5000m. Obiri finished second to clinch the silver medal whereas Agnes Tirop finished fourth missing the medal narrowly.
After Tokyo Olympics Obiri announced her retirement in track, to shift her focus on road races and marathon. In that scenario, Obiri had given Tirop the baton to take on the Kenya prowess in 5000m, 10,000m, and cross country.
It never happens, as fate would have it, her life was nipped in the bud at the pinnacle of her career. At 25, the former world cross country champion was hitting the sweet spot age in athletics, it's no wonder she obliterated the world record in 10km during Adidas Road to records in Germany on September 12, 2021.
Tirop was found dead at their home in Iten after she was allegedly stabbed by her husband. She will be laid to rest on Saturday, October 23 2021.
